Technology Solutions Plotting a Safer Path for Micromobility

A new safe cycle route algorithm and mobile app, developed in Victoria, is enabling riders to find the safest, easiest or most direct way to get to their destinations.

Intelematics, a technology and mobility solutions enterprise owned by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), developed the algorithm and ridePlan app in collaboration with the RACV, government transport authorities and mobility member organisations.

The app enables riders to avoid busy roads and locate bike-specific infrastructure to enhance the experience of cycling for pleasure, fitness or commuting.

The Senior Product Manager at Intelematics, Max Wang, will discuss the technology during his presentation at the 2022 Micromobility Conference and Expo in Sydney on 25th and 26th November.

“We can demonstrate how behaviour change can be created and sustained by overcoming barriers such as safety fears, fitness requirements and time constraints.”

It is one of numerous tech solutions for micromobility that will be showcased during the conference.

Max will explain how the Intelematics app is supporting new and aspiring riders to feel more confident to travel by bike and what can be done to further remove barriers to micromobility.

“It provides turn-by-turn voice guidance and new bike-centric features such as bike tours and directions to places of interest, such as bike pumps, drinking stations, bike parking, bike-accessible train stations and lifts,” he said.

“By partnering with government, member organisations and private enterprise, we can demonstrate how behaviour change can be created and sustained by overcoming barriers such as safety fears, fitness requirements and time constraints.”

Intelematics is supporting e-bike subscription company Lug & Carrie on several initiatives, in conjunction with local government in Melbourne and Sydney, to make it easier for Lug & Carrie customers to use their e-bikes as a substitute for a second vehicle, focusing on navigating safely to school, shops and work.

Other Innovative Software Solutions

A new Love to Ride app, getting more people on bikes by replicating the success of the Fitbit in motivating people to walk more, will also be showcased at the conference.

Love to Ride Asia Pacific Regional Manager Christina Sorbello said: “Much like a Fitbit transformed step counting by making it automatic and passive, our app automatically tracks your rides and riding stats without you having to open a tracking app, press start, ride, open the app again, press stop, etc.

“Our new app has revolutionised how easy it is for people to track all their riding – short trips, long rides, every ride. It also means we have a lot more data from everyday riders who otherwise don’t track their rides.”

Bicycle Network’s Transport Survey and Data Manager. Sam Kemp, will explain the cycling advocacy organisation’ s collaboration with UK technology company VivaCity Labs to produce an artificial intelligence survey method (AIRS) offering insights to how vulnerable road-users interact with traffic, to inform decision makers with infrastructure monitoring and planning.

Similarly, the Global Innovation Manager and Cities Specialist for the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), Monica Olyslagers, will reveal the organisation’s new evidence-based infrastructure risk evaluation model specific to cyclists and other light mobility users.

CycleRAP, developed by the International Road Assessment Program (iRAP), is designed to reduce crashes by identifying high-risk locations without the need for crash data.

iRAP is a registered charity dedicated to saving lives by eliminating high risk roads throughout the world.
