Railway Station Upgrades as Great Southern Rail Trail Steams Ahead
Leongatha, Victoria
Multi-million-dollar upgrades have been announced for two railway stations on Victoria’s Great Southern Rail Trail.
A total of $6 million has been earmarked to develop the Korumburra and Leongatha stations and surrounds, to enhance community open space and boost activity in the town centres.
The State Government recently confirmed it will provide $2 million through its Regional Infrastructure Fund, to complement $3 million from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and $1 million from South Gippsland Shire Council.
The upgrades include creating additional car parking for both towns, constructing a pedestrian footbridge to link the Leongatha station with the town centre, creating new path connections to business precincts, installing new playground equipment, tree planting and landscaping, and building public amenities.
Work will start with construction of car parking in Leongatha in the coming weeks.
Korumburry and Leongatha are the two largest towns on the trail and the three-year project to develop their train station precincts comes as the Great Southern Rail Trail is being extended approximately 130km between Nyora and Yarram.
