New $100 million Swan River Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge
Perth, WA
New designs have been revealed for a $100 million Swan River Pedestrian and Cycling Causeway Bridge linking the Perth CBD with Victoria Park.
The WA Government last week announced the contractors chosen to construct the six-metre-wide bridge, which will be built close to an existing Causeway Bridge over the Swan River.
WA Transport and Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said the new structure would provide a separate path for active transport, offering a safer and easier route for the 2,000 cyclists and 1,500 pedestrians who currently use the causeway daily.
The Federal and WA Government last month announced they would contribute an extra $25 million each to the project, with the City of Perth also contributing to the costs.
Construction is expected to begin this year.
The bridge is part of a $1.69 billion project dubbed Perth City Deal, which includes:
- a CBD Transport Plan to improve active and public transport accessibility and safety
- developing an inner-city campus of Edith Cowan University and expanding Curtin University
- rejuvenating the Perth Cultural Centre, Perth Concert Hall and the WACA sporting complex.
- a new WACA aquatic centre
- preliminary design work for a Perth Aboriginal Cultural Centre
