Pedal Power Joins Infrastructure Alliance

ACT bicycle advocacy group Pedal Power has aligned itself with Canberra business groups and other organisations to call for a Canberra Region City Partnership that could bring better infrastructure, including a more extensive, connected, safe and convenient network for active travel.

“Over the past decade, City Partnerships have been rolled out in every State and Territory except the ACT,” Pedal Power executive director Simon Copland explained. “This has left the ACT receiving less Federal funds for essential infrastructure projects, making it more difficult for us to transition to a sustainable transport future.”

The alliance is led by Independent ACT Senator David Pocock, who last month released ‘A Vision For Canberra’ constructed on four pillars: housing, events, innovation and transport.

Simon said the partnership is advocating for a better connection between Lake Burley Griffin and the city centre, in line with city designer Walter Burley Griffin’s original plan, and for light rail to connect to the airport.

“This light rail connection would be accompanied by fully separated cycling links, creating essential active travel infrastructure in the east of Canberra,” he said.

“Both projects would greatly decrease the city’s reliability on cars, reducing congestion and emission and encouraging alternative modes of transports including bikes.”
