Amazon Invests Heavily in Micromobility

Logistics giant Amazon has recently opened its latest micromobility hub, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. It’s one of 40 such hubs that Amazon has already opened in cities across Europe.

Micromobility hubs are physical centres within urban areas where packages are sorted before the final leg of their journey. They are usually located within delivery stations, which represent the last mile of Amazon’s order process.

Over the next five years, Amazon is planning to invest €1 billion (A$1.63 billon) in the electrification and decarbonisation of their transportation network across Europe through innovations like micromobility hubs.

Their goal is to have 100,000 electric delivery vehicles, across all types and sizes from e-cargo bikes to full sized trucks, in service worldwide by 2030, helping to save millions of tonnes of carbon every year.

This fleet includes micromobility such as the cargo bike pictured at the top of this article. According to Wikipedia, Amazon had over 1.5 million staff and US$574 billion (A$861 billion) in revenue in 2023.

The majority of Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods (a company purchased by Amazon in 2017) grocery deliveries in Manhattan, New York are now completed via e-cargo bikes.
